Fewer than one in four Texas electrician exam attempts ended in a pass in fiscal year 2025.

This page collects the numbers TDLR publishes for each fiscal year, plus figures from a TDLR staff report on the current year.

Each figure names its year and exam, because TDLR split the journeyman exam into two parts in March 2025 and the years are not directly comparable.

In short

  • In FY2025 there were 26,303 exam attempts, and 6,181 passed: 23.5 percent.1
  • The overall pass rate fell from 28.06 percent in FY2022 to 23.50 percent in FY2025.21
  • The master calculations exam passed only 19.08 percent of attempts in FY2025.1
  • In early-eligibility journeyman candidates, first attempts passed at 67.2 percent and retakes at 19.7 percent in the first quarter of 2026.3
  • The weakest topics are calculations: services, branch circuits and motors.3

Pass rates by fiscal year

128.06 percent in FY2022

TDLR counted 12,306 attempts in fiscal year 2022, of which 3,453 passed. Journeyman passed 2,134 of 7,048 attempts (30.28 percent).2

227.65 percent in FY2023

14,797 attempts and 4,091 passes. Journeyman: 2,307 of 7,799 (29.58 percent). Master NEC: 798 of 3,090 (25.83 percent). Master calculations: 791 of 3,644 (21.71 percent).4

326.37 percent in FY2024

15,170 attempts and 4,000 passes. Journeyman: 2,365 of 8,490 (27.86 percent). Master NEC: 763 of 2,934 (26.01 percent). Master calculations: 696 of 3,487 (19.96 percent).5

423.50 percent in FY2025

26,303 attempts and 6,181 passes. The jump in attempts coincides with the split of the journeyman exam into two parts, which are listed as separate rows next to the old single exam. TDLR's table lists both for FY2025, so do not add those journeyman rows together.1

202415,1704,00026.37%

These totals cover all electrician exams, not only journeyman and master.

By exam, FY2025

5Journeyman NEC: 24.46 percent

5,731 attempts, 1,402 passed.1

6Journeyman Calculations: 20.56 percent

6,328 attempts, 1,301 passed.1

7Master NEC: 22.21 percent

3,472 attempts, 771 passed.1

8Master Calculations: 19.08 percent

3,946 attempts, 753 passed. This is the lowest pass rate of the main exams.1

9Residential wireman: 30.15 percent

1,098 attempts, 331 passed.1

10Fiscal year 2026 so far: about 22 to 25 percent

A TDLR staff report counted 17,464 exams between September 2025 and March 2026. The overall pass rate was 22.25 percent in the first quarter, 23.51 percent in the second quarter and 25.39 percent in March.3

First attempts and retakes

11First attempts pass far more often than retakes

For journeyman candidates approved at 7,000 hours, the staff report lists 177 first attempts in the first quarter of 2026 with 119 passes (67.2 percent), and 497 retakes with 98 passes (19.7 percent). Retakes made up about 74 percent of the attempts in that group. Among candidates from an apprenticeship program, first attempts passed at 83.5 percent and retakes at 23.7 percent.3

The takeaway is that the first attempt is the best one. Candidates who retake tend to be the ones who have already struggled, and every retake of a part costs the $78 PSI fee again.6

Weakest topics

12First-attempt averages of 51 to 61 percent

The staff report gives the average first-attempt score by exam: journeyman NEC 34.11 of 56 (61 percent), journeyman calculations 13.15 of 24 (55 percent), master NEC 42.19 of 70 (60 percent) and master calculations 15.23 of 30 (51 percent). With 70 percent needed, the average first-time candidate falls short on every exam.3

13Calculations pull the average down

The report singles out service and feeder calculations, branch circuit calculations and, for master candidates, motor calculations as the weakest areas.3
